Heritage Architecture

In addition to alterations and new builds, Catherine Ellen works closely with conservation architect Tony Ussher to conserve and restore Canterbury's heritage buildings post-earthquake.

This work often utilises Point Cloud software to scan the building’s interior and exterior surfaces, from which we construct a highly accurate 3D building model. This specialist approach then allows the consultant team to confidently undertake heritage-specific design solutions.

Heritage Documentation

Catherine Ellen, in collaboration with Tony Ussher Architect, provides conservation and documentation services for buildings of Heritage significance. This work involves thorough research of archives, photographic records and - where safely achievable - site surveys, to gain a clear understanding of the original construction methodologies. This information is recorded and circulated within the consultant team in order for requisite repairs and structural upgrades to be undertaken in the most appropriate and efficient manner.

To date Catherine Ellen has been involved in the following projects:

  • Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings, Christchurch

  • Old Municipal Chambers, Christchurch

  • St Paul’s Church, Glenmark

  • St John’s Church, Hororata

  • St Mary’s Church, Geraldine

  • St John’s the Evangelist, Okains Bay

  • St Faith’s Church, New Brighton

  • Peel Forest Hall, Peel Forest
